Back in July, when WNBA player Sophie Cunningham first made her comments opposing transgender inclusion in sports, she claimed it wasn’t about “hating trans.” Since then, of course, she’s posed with fans wearing anti-trans merch and even cozied up to Riley Gaines, a Trump-aligned opponent of trans rights. Anyone who’s watched the trajectory of Gaines — or of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling for that matter — knows how this goes: It starts with a comment, or a personal grievance, and then it becomes your entire personality.
Case in point: Cunningham attended Mizzou’s homecoming football game wearing a “woman” hat that also mocks the label “cis” — a common anti-trans tactic meant to deny the validity of transgender women. It’s cringe behavior that, if continued, only leads to one place: trying to make a career off anti-trans influencing.
